Christian Counseling Degrees
When we become Christians, that does not mean that we now have God on our side and will never encounter troubled times and hardships. On the contrary - we will still encountered tough times that weigh heavy on our minds, emotions, and our souls. Psalms 23:4 says, "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me." It doesn't say that you will not have to walk through the valley of the shadow of death (tough times) - it says that the Lord will be with us during these trying times and will comfort us, guide us (His staff), and protect us (His rod).
Unquestionably, stress, burnout, tension, anxiety, depression and other issues that can wreak havoc on people's lives are on the rise, especially in today's tough economic times. Do these problems impact people in your congregation ? Absolutely. In fact, recent studies from the National Institute on Mental Health revealed that one out of every four adults in this nation suffer from a diagnosable and treatable mental health condition. Their research even revealed that one out of every twenty children between the ages of 4 and 17 also experience emotional or behavioral difficulties. Mental health counseling is a much needed service to help provide healing and restoration to a hurting world. Getting the right help is so important. Getting help that is from a Christian counselor is also very important. Psalms 147:3 is clear: " He (the Lord) heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. " The two Hebrew words that are translated as brokenhearted literally mean "crushed" and "feelings" The Hebrew word for "wounds" does not mean physical injuries, but refers to those who are afflicted with grief, sorrows, and troubles. The reference is to mental sorrows; to a troubled spirit; to a heart made sad in any way. By reading the Psalms, it is clear that even David, described as a man after God's own heart, struggled at times with depression. The Lord knew his heart and desired restoration and healing for him. Students pursuing this degree receive instruction in how to use the scriptures to provide the support hurting people need from a Christian perspective, guiding them though the troubled waters to find healing and restoration.
